PTA board for next year

It’s time to start thinking of next year’s PTA positions- special thanks to all our new members who are taking positions! We love having new people to join our group. The more the merrier! Here are the elected positions for next year. These are the ones we will need to have a vote on to approve before they are official. It took us a little while to find our new treasurer, so this is a little later than usual. Typically we hold the vote at the talent show, but this year it will have to be at one of the end of the year picnics. If you have any questions or comments about these positions, or the voting process, please email Sharon Parker.

Elected PTA positions for 2012/2013 year:

President: Sharon Parker
1st VP: Erika Berger (Programs)
2nd VP: Serena Skretvedt (Fundraising)
3rd VP: Amy Deady (Fundraising)
Treasurer: Tiffany Whaley
Secretary: Debra Gozzi

Swift Creek Elementary’s got talent!

Our annual talent show will be May 18th at 6pm. Any students from grades 3-5 can participate. Auditions will be after school May 1st and 2nd and dress rehearsal will be May 8th at 4pm. If you would like to help out, we still have a few slots available- sign up online here.

Pie in the Face Contest

pie

A very special event will take place during the Great Gator 5K race on Saturday April 28th: a Pie in the Face contest! Students will have a chance next week to enter a raffle for the chance to throw a pie at some of our favorite teachers and staff members. Raffle entries are only 50 cents each- students can enter as many times as they would like. We will have a table set up each morning next week, April 23rd-27th from 9:00-9:15 am. Students can stop by on their way to class and enter the raffle. Multiple names will be drawn from each grade level and winners will be announced on the school loudspeaker.

The pie throwing will happen during the Great Gator 5K that Saturday. So far we have Mr. Sthreshley, Mr. Fillman, Mrs. Little, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Biddle and Mrs. Innes who have agreed to have pies thrown at them! Students are super excited about this and it’s a great way to kick off a special week of school spirit and fun leading up to our 5k and Fun Run. Don’t forget to register for the race if you haven’t yet-online registration ends this Thursday, the 25th.

Mighty Minds Museum

Our third graders will be hosting their annual “Might Minds Living Museum”. If you haven’t ever attended this event, we encourage you to come. The kids have so much fun and there  is lots to learn!  We will have two different nights to view it. The first will be at Barnes & Noble store- this is also a fundraiser for the Museum.

Tuesday April 3rd – performance at 6pm. Shopping all day will count towards our school- please mention SCES when you checkout.

Wednesday April 4th- two performances at 6:00 and 7:15pm at our school.

Third grade parents: please sign up to volunteer to help- we need parents to make these shows happen! Grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc…are also welcome to come help. Here is the link to sign up online.

5K Registration Now Open

5kregister

The 1st annual Great Gator 5K and kids fun run was approved at the PTA general membership meeting and we are exciting to get things under way! Online registration is open now- register early as space is limited.

About the race:

Swift Creek Elementary School will host the first annual Great Gator 5K and Kid’s Fun Run on Saturday, April 28. The course will traverse the roads and pathways of Brandermill, beginning and ending at the SCES campus. This event will focus on celebrating healthy living as a community while benefiting SCES’ technology initiative.

The Great Gator 5K is funded by sponsor donations and runner entry fees. All profits will fund the purchase of handheld technology that will be used in classroom learning. Many studies have shown the benefits for students who get hands-on learning using these devices as well as other classroom aids such as large touch screens and projectors. Our school is in need of updating its technology; this is not something that Chesterfield County can always provide. By fundraising within the community, we can bridge the gap and help students “Race into the Future” through participation in an increasingly global society.

Race day will include the 5K, a Kid’s Fun Run, and a festive after-race party. We have all ready received a huge, positive response from the school  and surrounding communities and are prepared for up to 500 runners. In addition to race participants, we expect to welcome families cheering on the runners. This population creates an amazing opportunity for businesses to reach a wide audience.

Sponsorship:

In an effort to reduce expenses and maximize the dollars available to donate to the school, sponsorship opportunities are being offered. Sponsorship can be in the form of cash donations, in-kind donations of food, prizes, give-aways or race-team participation. Several levels of sponsorship are available with many providing advertising during the race. Sponsors will also have the option to purchase a booth at the race. You can download the sponsorship packet now. Sponsorship inquiries may be made to sponsors@swiftcreek5k.com.

Entry Fees:

5K: $25
Kids Fun Run: $10 (Age 12 and under)
5K Family Rate: $20 ea (4 or more-immediate family only)

The Kid’s Fun Run race entry fee includes a race t-shirt and a gator medal. 5K participants will receive the t-shirt, medal and a swag bag filled with various freebies from sponsors. Registration will be online only. Space permitting, race day registration may be available but those runners are not guaranteed a shirt and will be placed in the last starting wave regardless of runner pace.

Register online now! We look forward to seeing you at the race.

Calendar Changes

Coffee & Conversation for March and April:

Due to very low attendance at our parent presentations, we will not be hosting them for the remainder of the 2012 school year. Thank you to our speakers from the Chesterfield County Dept. of Mental Health Support Services. Our Prevention Consultant, Ginger Dotter can be reached at dotterg@chesterfield.gov or 768-7747.

Recycling Updates

recycle

Starting March 2nd we will no longer be collecting juice pouches for recycling.  The volunteers will only be responsible for collecting the chip bags from the cafeteria. A new program will be starting- collecting Elmer’s Glue stick containers effective immediately.  Only glue sticks, not bottles.  There will be a box placed on the stage to collect them. The recycling committee will be working with the teachers to help us collect them in the classrooms. Thank you to everyone for helping our gators go green!

Science Days

science

On March 19-20 the Science Museum of Virginia will be visiting SCES!  There will be an assembly, workshops and hands-on exhibits.  This will be a fun learning opportunity for our students. If you are interested in volunteering, check out the online sign up.

The Great Gator 5K and Fun Run
Racing Toward the Future

Whether you tread the early morning paths, take solace in dusk as the sunsets, or thrive in the satisfaction of squeezing in a run as your schedule allows, few things in life provide the psychological and physical gratification of running. Swift Creek Elementary School PTA is exploring the possibility of hosting the first annual Great Gator 5K and Fun Run, April 28, 2012. The course would traverse the roads and pathways throughout various local neighborhoods, beginning and ending on the elementary school’s campus. This event would focus on celebrating healthy living as a community while benefiting Swift Creek Elementary School’s technology initiative. Our goal is to transcend the physical walls of the school building, not only by running 3.1 miles throughout residential neighborhoods, but by funding access to technological devices. These devices would provide opportunities for our students to participate in an increasingly global society. A vote will be conducted February 27, 2012 at the next PTA meeting. If approved, flyers and information will be forth coming.

Bruce A. Fillman
Assistant Principal
